Egyptian Tabla Fundamentals w/ SOUHAIL KASPAR (Sat 10:30am - 12:30pm) more info This class introduces technique for classical Middle Eastern drumming on the Egyptian tabla, also known as doumbek, darbuka, or derbeki.* Beginning students will learn the basic strokes used for a proper foundation to learning this exciting and versatile instrument. It’s a new twist on belly dance competition… a contest highlighting the Art of Improvisation! Here’s your chance to put your skills to the test in an old-fashioned dance off. We pick the music, you get up and show us your best stuff!

Sound interesting? You should have a good nature, a fun-loving spirit, a healthy perspective on competition and a balanced view of yourself and the dance. All styles of Belly Dance movement and costuming are welcome. Amateur and professional categories are available. Workshop registration is not required. Winners receive CASH PRIZES. Complete details and rules available upon request. Contestant Entry Fee due by May 13.

The Open Stage at the Austin Belly Dance Convention is an opportunity for dancers of all skill levels to showcase their skill for an appreciative and supportive audience. It is an opportunity to show the diversity of the dancers themselves and the diversity of the dance styles that fall under the umbrella of Belly Dance. The Open Stage show will be held in the Ballroom from 2-7pm on Saturday, June 14.

All dancers, including all members of troupes, who wish to perform in the Open Stage show must be registered in advance for at least one workshop class. To schedule your performance, please register online at www.bahaia.com then contact Candy Southerland at abdc@bahaia.com during the appropriate time indicated below.

May 1 – May 13 bookings will be accepted from participants enrolled in the Red HOT Deal Package on a first-come, first-served basis.

May 14 – June 1 bookings will be accepted from all other registered participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
